"Foam for the Holidays" Campaign
Every holiday campaign replays the same creative. Hally wanted to do it differently.
Hally is a gender-inclusive, nostalgia-driven line of at-home hair care products for Gen Z, built from scratch and launched into a category that had never had to speak to this audience before.
A conventional "Christmas-themed" execution (red, green, and nothing else but a bow) would have made Hally’s first holiday season blend in with all the other brands (not in a good way). Hally had to show its personality even during a highly competitive seasonal moment.
01.
Context
The brand needed a holiday push for its limited-edition foam hair dye packs, one that could transcend generic seasonal beauty marketing without losing what made Hally's identity distinct in the first place. The campaign also marked Hally's first push onto physical shelves at Walmart, giving the foam packs an in-store presence to back up the digital push.
02.
Problem
How do you show your personality during a holiday season with high consumer expectations? Do you show up the same as the other brands or with your own spin? Hally had to figure out how to make this inaugural holiday season memorable without losing its brand DNA. The color palette needed to expand into Hally's own reference points instead of stopping at the same three colors every shelf neighbor already owned.
03.
How I Moved the Org
I leaned into Hally's existing nostalgia and wackiness, building the campaign around a wider 90s pixel-art range and gamifying the holiday push so customers could "level up" their hair color with Hally's foam dye during the holidays. The core inspiration leaned into brand DNA and leveraged pixel art holiday motifs that we could use throughout the season. I then translated those digital graphics to physical (by way of childhood Perler Beads) that were used as a set for the product photography. I managed the full pre- and post-production process myself: packaging design, retail display for the new Walmart placement, digital campaign assets, photoshoot pre and post-production. The creative helped land Hally an online test with Ulta and a large holiday order commitment from Walmart. Allure featured the kits in its print gift guide that same season.
